What is a wireless CarPlay dongle?

A wireless dongle converts your existing wired CarPlay to wireless. That is the entire product. You plug it into the same USB port your iPhone currently uses. What is a CarPlay AI box?

A CarPlay AI box is a completely different product. It plugs into the same USB port but instead of acting as your phone, it runs its own full Android operating system. Your car thinks it is a phone running CarPlay but it is actually a small Android computer.

This means you get the full Google Play Store on your car screen. Netflix, YouTube, TikTok, any app you can download on an Android phone. You also get wireless CarPlay and wireless Android Auto as apps within the Android system.

What it does not do well: boot as fast as a dongle, connect as simply, or feel as polished as native CarPlay. There is always a trade-off between flexibility and simplicity.

Which one do you need?

Get a wireless dongle if:

  • You are happy with what CarPlay already does
  • You just want to stop plugging in your phone every time
  • You use Maps, Spotify, phone calls and nothing else
  • You want the simplest possible upgrade
  • Budget is a priority, dongles start at around £25

Get an AI box if:

  • You want Netflix, YouTube or any app on your car screen
  • You want full Android on your factory screen
  • You use your car for longer journeys or EV charging breaks
  • You have passengers who want entertainment
  • Your car does not have a touchscreen, some AI boxes include a remote

The most important thing nobody tells you

Most angry reviews online are from people who bought the wrong category. Someone who wanted Netflix bought a dongle and is furious it does not stream video. Someone who just wanted wireless CarPlay bought an AI box, found the 40 second boot time annoying, and returned it.

As one Reddit commenter put it: "If you just want wireless CarPlay, any of the £25 ones are fine. An AI box is going to be a waste for you." The reverse is equally true. If you want video and apps, a dongle will never give you that no matter how expensive it is.
